Hi Guys,
We did it!
Right in the middle of the summer break we crazily decided to run a tasting on Portugal and Galicia, the home of Vinho Verde and Rias Baixas.
We explored the 30 month lees aged Albarinho fizz, which gave amazing value versus other vintage styles (namely Champagne). Then the Alvarinho masterclass of Portugal.
The history of this region is heavily linked to England and King Charles, who needed an alternative to French wine, and he found one in the wines of the Minho and Douro rivers. Favourable export taxation made these regions grow and the development of Port became 'a thing'. With the aguardente liquor to fortify the wine to help preserve for the long journey to England. Popularity reigned and wines were appreciated.
Rias Baixas has a slightly different past. With independence and autonomy playing a large part of it's history. The Roman's were definitely involved, along with the monasteries. Galcia has 5 DO wine regions, and Rias Baixas is one of them, an it has 5 sub regions of it's own. All 90% Albarinho, but 12 grapes are allowed in the DO.
Our final wines from Martin Codax were truly beautiful with Lees aging providing more weight, body and mouthfeel.
I'd like to thank Jordan at Love Cheese for hosting us for the first time. Whilst it was a 'hot' evening, the location is perfect and the cheese selection has taken us to another level.
Enjoy everyone and see you for Meet the Maker - Duoro in September.
